The Howard University Dem Prez Debate

By DH Michon

In case you missed the debate on PBS, you missed a Presidential Candidate, former Sen Mike Gravel of Alaska, at Gavel2008.us, in his opening statement, saying that the first thing he would do as Prez would be to abolish the War on Drugs. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. After all these years an honest-to-goodness presidential candidate gets up in front of America and says this damn war on our own people has got to stop! He also used another opportunity to deliver the same sweet message.

Unfortunately, all the rest of the candidates were content to let it go at that. Smug smiles all ’round. In fact as we gained one we lost one as Dennis Kucinich was notable by his silence on the issue. He made some weak aversions to “diversion” ( from the courts, aka, “Drug Courts” which holds prison over the heads of addicts caught in the fire of the Drug War), coke/crack disparity, and the old “treatment” bull, but that was it. Other than that, Kucinich was strong. I got the impression that he’s starting to think he can win and that he has made the same old “political calculation” on the WOD. Recall that he was eloquent in his opposition to the WOD last time around.Go to Hell Kucinich, you’ll be lucky to go back to the Senate!

Gravel was a brave new voice, very exciting. He called for abolition of the income-tax. He lacks polish but we can get that from Edwards or Obama. Mike Gravel for President! Still have a long way to go.

What we need is to end both wars: the War On Drugs (Americans) and The War in Iraq. LTE’s (Letters to the editor) supporting what Gravel has obviously set out to present to America
would be a great boon to reform efforts. Likewise, Kucinich should pay a price for the way he dropped the ball or has dropped us.
