just insert your USB key into a PC

With this tiny Cygwin setup on your USB flash drive, you can use anyone's MS-Windows PC (standard internet cafe PCs, like XT or NT), and have your own files, desktop, browsers, ssh, editors, etc., on a 256M (or larger) flash drive.

To use tinycygwin, you insert your tinycygwin USB into a host PC, and click on the mount.bat script. Up comes a console window (rxvt running bash), and that's it! If you want an X-Windows desktop, you type the startx.sh command. You never leave Windows, you don't reboot. The tinycygwin X-desktop is just another set of .EXE and DLLs to MS Windows.

Tinycygwin has fluxbox xterm, aterm, rxvt, PuTTY, ssh, naim, plus about 300 other typical Linux (Unix) and X-Windows commands! Also Windows maintenance/internals commands like fdisk, disktype, psinfo, sdelete. Browsers: links, dillo. Crypto like gpg, steghide. Privoxy, Tor. Lightweight web servers. PC-integrated sox audio. Editors like vim, nano, pico, xedit, ed, vi, zile, gnotepad, emacs, Ted. Languages like Perl, Pico Lisp. Tiny C compiler, Lua, MurgaLua (Cygwin murgalua, Win32 or X env. auto-detect), fluid. SQLite3. Games like chess, checkers, cbzone, hangman, rogue. Two tiny flight simulators. Much more. Open source/freeware.

  • If you already have Cygwin installed, you won't want to use Tiny Cygwin. (Tiny Cygwin will modify Cygwin mount points which are stored in the Windows registry. Don't use Tiny Cygwin on systems that already have Cygwin installed.)
