I happened across a page in the Newark Star-Ledger's web site devoted to adulation of the state's photogenic, but lethal Gov., Christie Todd-Whitman, best known for her active opposition to needle exchange: www.nj.com/christie/

There's a handy form for e-mailing Her Righteousness to let her know what you think of her policy in the state with the 4th highest HIV rate from intravenous drug use.

Subj:   SUPPORT TODD McCORMICK!
From:   Steve Kubby
Date:   Sat, 2 Aug 1997
URL:   http://www.mapinc.org/lists/MAPTALK/v97.n382

Friends,

A fellow activist, who has repeatedly stood up for our cause, needs our help.  Regardless of what you think about this case, several points are clear:

- --U.S.  Magistrate James McMahon order that McCormick not use any medical marijuana through Aug.  13, is an outrageous violation Prop. 215 and international laws on medical use.

--This case, like it or not, will be used by the opposition to attack medical marijuana and to weaken The Compassionate Use Act of 1996.

- --Prop.  215 sets no limit on how much medical marijuana a patient may possess or cultivate.

PLEASE, show Todd that we are behind him.

Live Free or Die,

Steve Kubby

Here are some samples from a few of the many great LTEs sent in so far on this week's Focus...

Dear Editor:

It's tragic that Esequiel Hernandez had to die to prove a point: the U.S.  Military has no business "playing cops" in the government's messy "war on drugs." It will be far more tragic if that point "swept under the rug."

Now, in a typical "drug war" response, the government's grand jury hearings are merely a charade to quell the public's concerns:

Will a 16 year-old boy's death be "swept under the rug," or will the public know the truth? Your paper can make a difference!

Sincerely

Subj:   SENT: U.S.  Troops withdraw from border
From:   "Robert Lunday"
Date:   Mon, 4 Aug 1997
URL:   http://www.mapinc.org/lists/MAPTALK/v97.n384

Dear Editor,

Your article, "Pentagon ends patrol on border," makes it clear that the military is reevaluating their role on the border.  What is amazing is that we Americans still think we are getting our money's worth from the $800 million to $1 billion a year we spend on the military's involvement in the war on drugs.

snip

The least we can do for Esequiel Hernandez is to make sure he get's a fair "trial." The only way that will happen is if news people like you are brave enough to publish the truth about this seemingly stacked grand jury.  Please research, find the truth and publish it prominently.

To the editor:

I served more than three years in the military, and I can attest to what a fine organization it is.  I will never forget our drill sergeant teaching us that when he called, "What is the spirit of the bayonet?" we should shout, "To KILL!" That was necessary.  The Army needs to be ready and willing to break things and kill people.

At the time, though, I never dreamed that this powerful force would be turned on our own citizens.  The family and friends of Esequiel Hernandez have learned how wrong I was.  But is it necessary? Is it a proper use of our fighting men? And, forgive me, does it have any possibility of success?

DRUGSENSE TIP OF THE WEEK

Due to a number of requests we have decided to remove DrugNews-Digest (DND) from the MAPTalk chat list.  We are also going to slightly extend the amount of text from each article in order to enhance the amount of information you can get without going to the link to read the full article.

The idea of DND is to enable reformers to stay informed on Drug news issues while investing as little time as possible.  This new format should enhance the product nicely but will also slightly lengthen it.  All MAPTalk digest subscribers will be subscribed automatically to the new DND.

Anyone else who would like to subscribe to the DND daily drug news synopsis should visit the DrugSense web page at http://www.drugsense.org/ or send a message to with subscribe DrugNews-Digest in the body of the message.

Those not receiving this excellent news brief should consider subscribing.  We consider DrugNews-Digest to be the most worthwhile, timely and complete compilation of drug news in the reform movement.

This is just another of the many free services DrugSense offers our members.  Watch this feature weekly to learn more about what DrugSense can do for you.
